The process of makingthe
rim for kompang from wood is done using wood turning lathe.
Certain types of wood with sound qualityis chosen. This gives good results. Although the wood itself is not hitto make any part of the music, a good quality of wood is chosen to withstandtime. After finding the wood a rough cut is madeinto circular blocks like the ones stacked in the picture. The blocks areleft on shelves to cool dry (not under direct sunlight). The drying timerequired can be anywhere from three months to five depending on the weather. This drying is done only after a coat of wax is applied. The wax helpsthe wood maintain its integrity and keep from cracking. Cracked wood willcontinue cracking until it breaks. Upon the completion of the long dryingsession, the wood is worked into a final product. |
